San Diego Hippotherapy is a PATH International Premier Accredited Center located in Ramona, CA – the Valley of the Sun. San Diego Hippotherapy was founded in 2001 and is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation. After eight years “down the hill” in Lakeside, we were delighted to move the program to the horse-friendly community of Ramona in 2009.
Our mission is to provide equine-assisted therapies and services to children and adults with physical and cognitive disabilities. We offer three distinct programs:
- Hippotherapy: In hippotherapy, skilled therapy sessions are provided by licensed occupational or physical therapists, using the movement of the horse to improve neurological and sensory processing.
- Freedom Reins: San Diego County is home to over 27,000 veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom. We are honored to provide therapeutic/recreational riding and equine-assisted activities to our wounded military service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
- In the Valley of the Sun: Families of service members make sacrifices every day. Our “In the Valley of the Sun” program provides military children whose parents have been injured in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, or whose parents are currently deployed, the opportunity to spend a day at the farm, learning horsemanship skills, riding, and just having fun.
You can find more detail on each program on our “programs” page. If you are interested in entering a San Diego Hippotherapy program, please email or call us for more information. A physician’s prescription and referral are required prior to beginning hippotherapy sessions, and a physician’s release is required for therapeutic riding services. We will make every effort to accommodate you, however, mounted equine activities may not be not the most effective or safest treatment for everyone. We will review specific precautions and guidelines with you. If riding is contraindicated for any reason, we will gladly provide dismounted equine-assisted activities.
